What is Pradosham?
Pradosham (also spelled Pradosh) is a sacred Hindu Vrat observed on the Trayodashi (13th day) of both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha in every lunar month. The word "Pradosh" refers to the twilight period — the auspicious time between sunset and nightfall — when Lord Shiva is worshipped with special devotion.
Types of Pradosham
- Soma Pradosham — When Trayodashi falls on a Monday; removes Chandra (Moon) doshas.
- Bhauma Pradosham — Falls on a Tuesday; pacifies Mars-related afflictions.
- Shani Pradosham — Falls on a Saturday; highly effective for Shani Dosha relief.
- Maha Pradosham — When Trayodashi falls on a Saturday during Krishna Paksha; considered the most powerful.
Significance
According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), a deadly poison (Halahala) emerged that threatened to destroy creation. Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the universe, and the gods worshipped him during the Pradosh kaal (twilight) to alleviate his suffering. Since then, worshipping Shiva during Pradosh is believed to be immensely powerful.
